Jonny’s Corner is a special nook in the Four Paws facility that showcases the artwork of Ponca, Nebraska artist, Jonny Binkard.
Jonny’s pet portraits started out as cartoon horses, dogs and cats for artist trading cards that she used to collaborate with other artists. She painted more animals on t-shirts for herself, which earned her admiration and a commission to do a realistic horse portrait.
Jonny surprised even herself at how much she enjoyed working on it, and the recipient loved it. With more commissions, she found that she enjoyed creating dog and cat portraits just as well as horses.
When creating a pet portrait, Jonny likes to try and capture the animal’s personality, and render it in a medium that suits the animal. She works in watercolor, pencil, charcoal, ink; and white charcoal on black or tinted paper. She is also exploring pastel as a lovely way to depict an animal’s richness.
Jonny says that she knows the portrait is a success when the owner tells me the portrait looks just like their pet. Another way that she knows the portrait is a success when she has a hard time letting it go!
Call us biased, but we like Jonny’s dog portraits the best, and that’s why we proudly have them hanging on the walls at Four Paws. Next time you stop by, make sure to check out Jonny’s Corner – all of the paintings displayed are for sale.
