Roxie is a Dachshund who was 8 years old and severely obese when she suffered a back injury and could not use her hind end afterwards.
Her owners were elderly and knew they could not care for her, so they took her to their vet to be euthanized. Their vet contacted Noah’s Hope Animal Rescue and surrendered Roxie to them.
Noah’s Hope contacted me to see if Roxie might benefit from therapy.
Roxie’s foster mom brought Roxie twice a week for therapy and also completed a home exercise program with her daily. This was during the winter months, so aqua therapy was not available at that time, but she worked on her core, weight bearing to her hind, moving to protect her spine, and functional mobility.
Roxie was a very hard worker and went from dragging her hind legs to trying to use them but falling frequently; from walking like she was drunk to where she is at now, walking with a little bit of a tipsy gait but her tail never stops wagging.
Her therapy did take quite a few months and had aqua therapy been available it most likely would have sped up her progress. Roxie is another very lucky dog – she was saved from being euthanized by Noah’s Hope, taken in by a great foster home and brought to me for therapy!
